What is a Baronage?
In the SCA each Barony is represented by a Baron and Baroness (or Baronage when refered to together). These people represent the Crown and are able to hold courts, officiate officer hand-overs, and issue awards to the citizens of the barony. It is the responsibility of the Baron and Baroness to promote the barony, celebrate the good works of its people, and advise the crown on matters in their barony. A typical baronage tenure is 2 to 5 years, however some remain in the position for longer. The honorific used to refer to people of baronage rank is “Excellency” ie. “Hello your Excellency”, “Their Excellencies are on time for court”.
A missive from current baronage: Proconsul Tullia and Proconsul Roman
Greetings citizens of Rowany or friends from afar! We are your humble Rowany Proconsuls, Tullia and Roman. Our tenure began on the Yule celebration of Ano Sosietatus LX, or mundanely MMXXV (2025). We are enthusiasts of Ancient Rome, as well as 16th century Poland, combat archery, and leather work for Proconsul Roman, and rapier, embroidery, and glass beads for Proconsul Tullia.
Why Proconsul and not Baron/ess? Proconsul was a title used in the roman period for a representative of a province (a significant simplification, but one suitable for a brief introduction). We have also chosen this title as it removes the gendered nature of Baron/ess, which has historically put a division in the roles of the baronage that we are not interested in engaging with.
It is our honour and pleasure to represent this fine barony, and we look forward to many prosperous years as its first citizens.
Yours in service,
Proconsuls Tullia and Roman
