30 years ago, the SCA Lochac had it’s first major event in Campsie, Sydney. Those who founded Lochac came from university, fantasy and gaming circles. They formed a medieval group that after a while decided to join the world wide SCA. They had a dream before we even called it The Dream. This is their story, and therefore ours.

At the Addison Road Community Centre Great Hall, Addison Road Marrickville NSW 2204 [map]*, on 16 June 2012:

• Museum display, photos and relics from 5 to 6pm;
• Theatre and storytelling from 6 to 8pm with an ‘intermission’;
• Eat, drink and talk to the founders and ‘old timers’ from 8 to 9pm;
• Lights on at 9, stay longer to talk or go to the pub with an old mate.

Cost: Students $10 / Booked $20 / At the door $30. Founders (pre 1982) in for free.

Come to learn, come to celebrate, come to meet and honour our founders and those who were lucky enough to be at that first event. This will not be your usual event. History as theatre and story is what this event is about, reliving the creativity and eccentricity of our beginnings. There will be plenty of food but no feast structure. Table with selections whenever you want.

There will be people you have not seen for years, Hrolf and Madelaine from Ynys Fawr for example, along with a bunch of other ‘dinosaurs’. Do not come if you want an ordinary feast where you sit up the back getting drunk and talking to your friends. Come to watch, participate and interact, and learn where we all came from.

* The venue can be reached by public transport: the 428 bus stops at the front gate (see bus map and timetable).

The weekend will commence with a ball at the Herb Greedy Hall, 79 Petersham Road, Marrickville NSW [map]. The ball will start at 6:30pm on Friday, 16 March.

On Saturday, 17 March, we will be holding a tournament, for both heavy combat and rapier, as well as a games day from noon. The heavy combat tournament will be a Valhalla Tournament with a luncheon provided.

That evening, from 6:30pm, a Feast will be held at Petersham Town Hall, 107 Crystal Street, Petersham NSW [map].

Note: The price for the Feast includes lunch at the tournament AND free entry to the Ball.

While many of you will be aware that there is a fighter practice on Tuesdays at Petersham, there is also one on Thursdays on Sydenham Green, the park across Unwin’s Bridge Road from St Peters Town Hall. It’s about a 100 metre stroll from the station. We have the town hall to retreat to if it’s wet, and as a venue for A&S, games, and so on. The usual starting time will be 7pm.

Fighting-wise, I’m going to try and make this practice fun, relaxed and friendly to new faces. There may be football kick-around warm-ups if popular demand is sufficient.

For those of you who like, or want to practice, fighting outdoors on grass, this venue is great – and we get a great evening breeze that cools things down in summer. It’s also nice and public: last Thursday we had a few kids asking us about what we were doing, and if we’re going to try and get broader public interest, a regular park practice will be a good place to start.

So I’d like to encourage fighters and non-fighters alike to come and fight / socialise / make things / plot world domination on Thursday nights.

This coming Thursday is the Australia Day public holiday, so we’ll be starting a bit earlier, at 5, to take advantage of the holiday (and all the people out and about, noticing what we’re doing). Bring a plate of food*, games, A&S things to do or discuss (the hall has some space for indoor A&S things), and/or armour. No garb necessary.
